Adult Beginning Strings

Have you always wanted to make your own music but have not had the time or the opportunity to learn an instrument until now? This class is for you. This will be a fun, non-threatening environment designed for students of all ages – the goal: to make beautiful music!

  • Starts January 4, 2022
  • Mondays 5:45 – 6:30pm
  • NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE NEEDED
  • Fee: $120 per semester
  • Students must obtain an instrument (Contact the JSO for information on where and how)

Jed Fritzemeier, Teacher

Since 2019, Jed has been the Director of the Community Music School and Director of Music Education for the Jackson Symphony Orchestra. A performing bassist, Jed plays with the orchestra in addition to free-lancing throughout the area. He was a public school orchestra teacher for 34 years finishing his career for the Chelsea School District, Chelsea, Mi. Jed was Teacher of the Year for the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association and the Michigan American String Teachers Association in 2008. In addition to the Jackson Symphony Orchestra, his performance credits include the Michigan Opera Theater, Toledo Symphony, Ann Arbor Symphony, Racine Symphony, Racine, Wisconsin, South Dakota Symphony, Sioux Falls, South Dakota and various festival orchestras, jazz ensembles, rock bands, polka bands since he was 15 years old.


Beginning Guitar Class

If you can count to four then you can play the guitar. We’ll learn the G major scale, what chords are in G major, embellishments for basic chords in the key of G, cadences and how to recognize them in music, minor chords vs major chords, SUS chords, power chords,  how and where to strum, ghost strums, simple strumming patterns for pop rock and reggae songs,  how to tune your instrument, how to hold your pick, and last but not least we will learn to play a popular pop rock song to be announced.

Dan Macmillan, Teacher

My Name is Dan MacMillan and for the last 10 years I have been teaching music in Los Angeles at Strum Rock School. I have toured with a cover band performing songs by artists such as 3 Doors Down, Incubus, Alicia Keys, Third Day, DC Talk, Linkin Park and many more. I graduated from New Tribes here in Jackson and I love any kind of music live.


Fiddle Workshop

This class is for anyone who has had at least 1 year of string instruction. Students must be able to read music. Music for this class will consist of all types of folk music such as American Fiddle Tunes, Irish and Scottish Airs, Jigs and Reels, Nordic Roots and anything else from the Folk music traditions. It’s all about FUN!

  • Starts January 9, 2022
  • Sundays 4:00 – 5:00pm, Weatherwax Hall
  • All age groups
  • Fee: $80 per semester – $20 to CMS students registered for lessons or String Team
